Something to get your teeth into…

23 May, 2017

In recent times we have become more aware of dental hygiene issues following the number of children having teeth removed due to excessive sugar intake.

The great news is that there are healthy and tasty options available for all the family to keep your teeth and gums in good shape.

Like any area of health there are certain considerations to be made

You want a product that will

  • Battle tooth decay
  • Sooth sensitive gums and teeth
  • Help bleeding gums
  • Sort out any plaque and bacteria
  • Perhaps whiten your teeth

Then you have to consider what you are putting in your mouth:

Does it contain:

This is an issue for many people – we are already having it added to our water and it can affect those with thyroid problems. It is also related to other health conditions. In addition, there appears to be no evidence that it helps to prevent tooth decay.  Fluoride free is a definite plus!

SLS – Sodium Laureth Sulphate.

This has been linked to allergies and bad breath.

Other Chemicals

We guess you prefer natural ingredients to put in your mouth?

You work hard on your healthy diet and then find sweeteners in your toothpaste!

Does it really need to look pretty to clean your teeth?

This is a big one for children and Mums! Of course, you want them to clean their teeth and of course, they want it to taste nice. You want that nice taste to be natural not chemical...

On the other hand, there are ingredients that you do want in your product…

Two key examples are CoQ10 and Hyaluronic acid. You may recognise CoQ10 because you associate it with energy production. It is used when people take statins too. A lack of CoQ10 is also linked gum disease which we need to prevent unless we want to lose our teeth!

Hyaluronic acid is produced in the body; it is part of our connective tissue. This substance is supportive in battling inflammation and can help the process of regenerating healthy gum tissue.

If you are concerned about gum health you can buy these substances as supplements.

As we mature we produce fewer nutrients; our bodies are simply less efficient at creating them. In addition, our lifestyle and the proverbial stress of modern life reduce our supplies even further. For this reason ingredients like CoQ10 and Hyaluronic acid may need to be added to our diet

Silica is helpful in toothpaste as it cleans within damaging the enamel

Luckily for you we have a great range of products that are sure to suit your family.

For the kids we have banana, raspberry, orange and blueberry flavoured toothpaste

For adults a variety of products including:

Biomed Propolis – this is a new product but proving very popular. It is fluoride free and fights bacteria and inflammation. It is made with thyme and Manuka so it tastes good too

Pharmanord Q10 toothpaste. This has been developed to help people with gum disease, as stated above CoQ10 has many functions but in this instance it supports healthy gums.

Weleda do a variety of flavours including mint free for those looking for an alternative taste. The plant gel toothpaste tackles teeth sensitivities and inflammation. This product also tackles plaque and decay

We must just mention mouthwashes

Any product with alcohol or harsh chemical will ultimately dry out your mouth and change the ph. balance.

The story of the Sarakan mouthwash and toothpaste is one your kids will love. The key ingredient is extract of Salvadora Persica or to you and me the toothbrush tree!! It was discovered by a Doctor working in India. He was intrigued as to why his patients had healthy teeth despite a poor diet. What he discovered was they chewed the twigs from this shrub!

In a similar vein the Weleda Rathania mouthwash is made with Rathania roots sourced from Peru. These roots are combined with myrrh, sage, eucalyptus and peppermint to support your gums.

It also goes to show that dogs really do know best! Nothing like a stick to clean your teeth.
