What are the Health Benefits of Fish Oil?

10 March, 2016

Fish has long been thought of as one of the healthiest foods for mind and body which has led to fish oil supplements becoming some of the most popular around the world. For this very reason, fish oil is one of the best researched of nutritional supplements with so many benefits: maintaining cardiovascular and neurological health, low blood cholesterol, a strong immune system and playing a huge role in children’s growth and brain development - even reducing the risk of developing asthma!

Mental Health

The abundance of omega 3 fatty fatty acids found in fish oil have long been thought to promote positive mental health, with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) playing an essential role in our brains. (Long words, I know, stick with us)

A large proportion of our brain tissue is made up of these fancy acids forming the very structure of our brain cells - our neurons wouldn’t be able talk to each other otherwise!

A leading psychiatric association advises that people consume 1000mg of EPA and DHA daily from oily fish or fish oil supplements.

Deficiencies in these essential acids can seriously affect our mood and ability to concentrate in adults, it’s even been linked to learning difficulties and behavioral problems in growing children.

It is estimated that the average intake of omega 3 from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is around 250mg per day. Shockingly only 1 in 4 people in the UK consume any oily fish at all!

Taking supplements containing Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce impaired cognitive function associated with aging.

Cardiovascular System

As we mentioned earlier, fish oil fatty acids play a vital role in cardiovascular health. Several research papers have even stated that a daily dose of 250mg of EPA and DHA contributes to normal function of a healthy heart, a daily intake of 2g of EPA and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels, and a daily intake of 3g of EPA and DHA contributes to normal blood pressure.

Research into Omega-3 fatty acids that can be consumed from fish oil supplements have been finding that fish oil can significantly decrease the chances of losing vision as we get older.

A study at the University of Melbourne conducted a meta-analysis of nine different studies on a total of 88,974 elderly people with more than 3,000 of those suffering from age‐related macular degeneration (AMD).

Caused by the thinning of the retina, AMD mostly affects adults over the age of 60 often resulting in the loss of sight over time. At worse this leads to blindness and is irreversable.

However the study revealed that regularly consuming fish twice a week lowered the risk of developing AMD, with those who ate the most Omega-3 fatty acids having a 38% lower risk than those who had the least. What a testament to the power of fish oils.

Make the right choice:

It’s likely that you won’t be consuming as much Omega-3 as your body might need, taking a regular supplement of fish oil can dramatically improve your health and wellbeing.
